Friday afternoon marked the end of the 2021 Green Wave basketball season. It was quite the season for Delbarton, facing COVID-19 restrictions, unexpected closures, cancellations, schedule changes and roster moves due to contact tracing. Though it all, the freshman program went undefeated 9-0, the JV team was 11-1, winning 11 straight games after an opening day loss to Sparta, and the varsity Green Wave went 8-3, finishing on an eight-game winning streak after a 0-3 start. All three programs truly lived up to the school motto,
Succisa Virescit.
The Freshman Green Wave had an incredible season, finishing undefeated 9-0. They outscored their opponents 513-250. Five times this season, they kept their opponents under 25 points. Captain Michael Van Raaphorst was a leader on and off the court this season, leading the team in scoring. Johnny Riley was solid on the boards, leading the team in rebounding, while Jake Bell was tenacious on defense and the team's leader in assists. The team also averaged over 10 forced turnovers per game.
The JV team, 11-1 overall, had a great season under coach
Matt White. The boys took an opening day loss and turned it into 11 straight wins. The Green Wave earned big wins over West Morris twice, Randolph twice, Chatham twice, Mendham and Pope John. Big contributors for the JV Wave include Sean Diczok, Spencer Shea, Mike Vaccaro, Ryan McGinn, Julien Radossich, Grant Dangler, Vincent Ferrara and Nicholas Modugno.
The Varsity Green Wave had quite the season as well, finishing 8-3, after an 0-3 start. The boys played hard all season long, earning big victories over Sparta, Chatham, Randolph, Pope John, Newton and its upset of then-undefeated West Morris. Senior starter
Alex Paulius was a star for Delbarton this season, scoring 14.7 points per game. Senior
Rohin Bobba was a threat from three this season, averaging 10.1 points per game, many of his points coming from behind the arc. Senior guard
Gary Lewis was the floor general, leading the Green Wave possessions, especially in crunch time. Delbarton also got contributions from
Max Cresti, Skyler Venezia, Derek Lagios and
Charlie Smith.
Congrats to all the coaches and student athletes on a tremendous season on the hardwood. You should all be proud of your accomplishments in quite an unusual season. Go Green Wave!
