Delbarton Basketball welcomed a strong field to Morristown over the weekend for the annual J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament, honoring the legacy of Delbarton alumnus J.P. Flynn. In front of an energized home crowd, the Green Wave battled through two competitive matchups, falling Friday to powerhouse St. Benedict's Prep before bouncing back with a resilient win Saturday over Mount Saint Michael Academy (NY).
Friday: St. Benedict's Prep 79, Delbarton 61
Coming in at 4–0, Delbarton faced its toughest test of the young season as nationally regarded St. Benedict's Prep improved to 5–0, handing the Green Wave their first loss of the year, 79–61.
Despite an early spark and a 17–19 first quarter, St. Benedict's used a 22–11 second quarter to create separation that Delbarton couldn't fully erase. Stephen Kmetz led the Green Wave with 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Austin Kolakowski drained four threes for 14 points. Günther Neumann added 13 points and continued to establish himself as a consistent interior presence.
St. Benedict's MJ Postell paced all scorers with 30 points.
Saturday: Delbarton 71, Mount Saint Michael (NY) 66
Less than 24 hours later, Delbarton responded with the kind of toughness and togetherness the tournament stands for. In a back-and-forth contest, the Green Wave closed strong with a 21-point fourth quarter to earn the 71–66 win and move to 5–1.
Kolakowski had the hot hand again, erupting for 23 points (including three from beyond the arc) to lead all scorers. Kmetz added 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Neumann (10 pts, 7 reb, 4 ast) and Ben DeLong (9 pts, 6 reb) made key contributions at both ends.
Late defensive stops and clutch free throws helped seal the win as the Green Wave moved to 1-1 on the weekend.
Delbarton returns to the court today for the final day of the J.P. Flynn Memorial Tournament, taking on Conrad School of Science (DE) at 3:00 PM.
