The Green Wave hockey team made a huge statement on Wednesday night in Wall, ending CBA's 32-0-3 streak, defeating the Colts 4-1 at Jersey Shore Arena.
It was an exciting game from the opening faceoff to the final whistle, with Delbarton controlling the tempo for much of the game. Senior captain
Trip Pendy gave Delbarton the early 1-0 lead with 3:26 into the first period with a rebound that trickled past goalie Andrew Skorupka. With a 1-0 lead after one period, Delbarton would give up an early equalizing goal as Thomas Mantellino would score on the power play for the 1-1 tie. The game would not remain tied for long as freshman
Liam Donnelly converted on a breakaway from a bad pass, making it 2-1 only 25 seconds after CBA tied the score at 1-1.
With a 2-1 lead, captain
Trip Pendy would double the lead on a beautiful shot off a breakaway shorthanded, giving Delbarton the commanding 3-1 lead going into the third period. That was all
Jason Cai would need, as he turned away 28 shots, including a beautiful glove save in the third period, preventing any CBA momentum.
Jack Gerne would seal the victory in the closing seconds for Delbarton with an empty-net goal and a 4-1 win.
"They were fantastic last year," Delbarton head coach
Bruce Shatel said. "We gave it everything we had but they were just better than us. They're very good this year. I think we're just a year older. We got a lot of experience and were fortunate to come down here in a hostile environment and find a way to win."
Nick Faccone would finish with 2 assists in a Green Wave victory. Delbarton will now face Pope John on Friday, January 6 at 4pm at SportsCare Arena.
