Sub-Varsity Week In Review - The Start of the Winter Season

Delbarton's sub-varsity winter teams are underway, with strong early performances across basketball, hockey, wrestling, and squash. As the season heads toward the holiday break, several squads have already shown competitiveness and growth.

Freshman Basketball

Freshman basketball opened the season at 2–2, competing well against a challenging schedule. The Green Wave dropped two close contests to Bergen Catholic (60–58) and Sparta (62–56), but responded with solid wins over Regis (NY), 51–39, and Oratory Prep, 49–38. The early results reflect a group that is learning quickly and battling in every possession.

JV Basketball

JV basketball is off to an impressive 3–1 start under new head coach Jerry Jabbour '20.  With its only loss coming by three points to Bergen Catholic (60–57) on December 15. Delbarton earned wins over Regis (54–39) on December 13, Oratory Prep (46–45) on December 16, and Sparta (49–28) on December 18.
The comeback win over Oratory stood out, as the Green Wave erased a large halftime deficit and then held off a final possession at the buzzer to secure the one-point victory.

Middle School Basketball

Middle school basketball has faced a challenging opening stretch, starting the season 1–6. With a very young roster featuring just three eighth graders, the team has mixed close losses with learning experiences. The Green Wave earned their first win on December 17, defeating Gill St. Bernard's 52–48, a result that showed progress as the group continues to develop chemistry.

JV Hockey

JV hockey has been one of the early highlights of the winter season, opening with a 4–1 record. After a narrow 3–2 loss to Seton Hall Prep on December 9, the Green Wave rebounded in impressive fashion with wins over Westfield (7–4) on December 11, St. Peter's Prep (6–0) on December 13, St. Augustine (3–1) on December 16, and CBA (7–3) at home on December 19. The group has shown depth, scoring balance, and resilience early in the year.

Middle School Hockey

Middle school hockey sits at 0–1–1 early in the season. After a tough 8–1 loss to Princeton Day on December 10, the Green Wave responded with a hard-fought 3–3 tie against Peck on December 17. The team will return from the Christmas break with a home matchup against Princeton Day on January 6.

JV Squash

JV squash competed once so far this season, falling 0–5 to a strong Pingry squad on December 11. The match provided valuable experience as the team continues to train and prepare for future competition.

Middle School Wrestling

Middle school wrestling opened the season with a strong 34–6 win in its first dual meet. John Matter and John Kinney earned wins by pin, Tyler Gieger posted a technical fall, and four additional wrestlers contributed victories by decision, giving the Green Wave a confident start to the winter.

With the winter season still in its early stages, Delbarton's sub-varsity teams have already demonstrated competitiveness, resilience, and growth. As schedules resume after the holiday break, these groups will continue building toward strong finishes and future varsity contributions.
